What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy has some very simple concepts underlying its philosophy. It believes that the structure or anatomy of the body is related to its function and that the body has an ability to self regulate when working as a whole integrated unit, in relation to its environment.
I am passionate about being an Osteopath and treating in alignment with those principles. I exclusively use those techniques associated with cranial / biodynamic osteopathy, which I find allows me to treat the whole person more effectively. The same innate intelligence that grows our bodies from a single cell also heals our wounds and sets our immune system in motion when we are unwell. Cranial osteopathy is all about listening to this intelligence and helping it to do its work. That is not to say joint and spinal manipulation doesn't have its place, just that the other stuff seems to work better for me!
What Osteopaths treat.
Osteopathy looks at the person rather than the condition and therefore the focus of the treatment is less on the individual symptoms but to allow the body to be free to shift so that its expression of self healing can emerge and the body can then work its way towards health again.
It is about restoring balance and harmony to the body so that the patient can find their way back to that natural sense of ease we all possessed in childhood. It is about looking beyond the current problem to see how the body came to this point and how it can return to a more integrated and healthy way of functioning.
Osteopaths have been helping patients recover their health, from a multitude of complaints, for well over a century. Treatment plans can range from 2-3 treatment visits for acute problems, to planned longer term support for ongoing issues. Over the years I have treated people with all kinds of health and musculoskeletal problems and my experiences have convinced me that there is always something an osteopath can do to help.
Many other factors will also influence this recovery, levels of exercise, adequate rest, diet, stress etc, will all have a big role to play in letting the healing process proceed at maximum pace. Generally if you do stuff that makes you happy that is going to be a pretty good start!
Paediatric Osteopathy.
From the rigours of birth to the challenges of adolescence and beyond, childhood is a time of enormous change. Children’s bodies have to adapt to constant growth and development brings unique challenges at every stage, not to mention all the bumps and bruises along the way.
I have an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy and over 15 years experience of treating children. I worked and taught at the Osteopathic Centre for Children from 2004 to 2013.
Osteopathy is a gentle, natural way to give your children a helping hand and is suitable for babies and children of all ages.
